Kyrgyz Visitor Group meets UNDEF for Gender Initiatives Update

On 28 June 2024 UNDEF received a group of policymakers, NGO workers, and media representatives from Kyrgyzstan. The meeting was part of the group’s visit to New York City, sponsored by the United States Department of State under their . The group of seven persons also included one representative of a former, successfully completed UNDEF project which involved Kyrgyz community broadcasters to advance gender justice.

In their meeting with this group UNDEF introduced participants to their funding cycle, thematic priorities, and presented women’s leadership and gender equality initiatives that UNDEF’s CSO Implementing Partners have been working on across the globe.

During the following discussion the commonality and importance of several issues addressed by UNDEF projects was confirmed, among them the continued need to promote women’s leadership, media freedom, and measures to address issues such as domestic violence, as well as insufficient capacity of safe/service centers for women.

The group also received information about the , which was carried out by the UN Partnerships Office with the help of hundreds of UN Volunteers. We the Women is a world-wide movement to engage the world’s women in shaping global solutions into the future. It was launched jointly by the UN Deputy Secretary General and the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

Several participants welcomed the global survey which asked women questions about how they see the future, their priorities, fears and hopes, and how global leaders can listen to them and support them. They positively noted that survey responses also included women’s feedback from Kyrgyzstan.
